The Grassroots Unwired app will allow you to view your assigned walklist, survey your targets, and set statuses for houses that you aren't able to survey. We'll walk through the functionality below.
Logging In
After launching the app, you'll see the login screen. Enter your username and password to proceed.
Next, you'll be presented with your assigned walklist for the day.
On the left side of the screen you'll see a list of your doors. On the right side, a map of your turf. Once you're standing in this neighborhood, a yellow person icon will indicate your current location to help you orient yourself.
If you're working one side of a street at a time, you can tap the All button to filter to just even or odd doors. Next to that button, you can use the Street Filter button to just display doors on a single street. The Knock Filter button allows you to view just the statuses you want, for example all the not knocked houses or all the come back later doors. Tap the Reset button at any time to view all doors again.
Setting Statuses
Once you're ready to start knocking doors, you have two options. You can either set a status, or perform a survey. Setting a status records the reason you were unable to speak with somebody at the door. To begin, tap the address of the door on the left side of the screen. This will display a list of all targets that that door on the right side.
If you want to set the status for the entire household, tap Set Home Status at the bottom right. If you were able to talk to one person at the door, but not another, you can tap the Status button next to their name to set it individually. In either case, you'll be presented with the possible statuses:
Choose the status, then tap Ok. Your response will be recorded and you can move on to the next door.
Performing a survey
When you are successfully able to survey an individual, tap Survey next to their name. This will launch into the script, where you'll collect/confirm contact information, and ask questions. Use the Next button at the bottom right to progress through the script questions.
When you reach the end of the script, you'll get a summary screen confirming all the information that was collected. Any questions that were skipped will be red, you can tap on them to respond to the question.
Once you're satisfied with the responses, tap Submit to record the survey responses and return to your walklist.
Creating a new record
If you want to add an address or subject to your list, either to set a status or perform a survey, tap the New Record button from the walklist screen. This will immediately launch the script. Typically, if you have the possibility of adding new records your script will present the contact info screen first. After filling in the subjects details, or simply the address, you can tap next to complete the survey as normal, or if simply setting a status, tap Knock at the lower left corner to record a status for the new record.
Autofilling contact information
When filling out the contact info form, there's a couple options available to save time. to begin, from the contact info form, tap Autofill Options at the bottom center. From there you'll have three options:
Use GPS: This will use the current GPS location of the tablet to autofill the address of the door you are standing at.
Photograph License Barcode: Allows you to take a picture of the barcode on the back of the subject's driver's license to autofill their name and address
Subject Info Lookup: If you are working off a walklist and don't know the subject's address, you can use this tool to search for them by name.
